If we have not figured out an orthodox gospel after 2,000 years of church history, then the future does not look very promising. The gospel is the centerpiece of our faith, of Christianity, and McLaren sits suspicious over its veracity. This teaching takes advantage of naive believers.  It is this kind of teaching that strives to give people a faith worth living for, but it does nothing to give one a faith worth dying for. Jesus never came to give a question mark next to the gospel, but an explanation point. Paul warns in Galatians 1:9 that we must be able to recognize the true gospel from a contrary one.
